About This Project

PRINTING PRESS

The production of Vedem was a near-miracle because of limited resources. Issues were printed with a typewriter found in the former school’s offices, while paper and supplies were smuggled into the bunkroom from offices in the ghetto. The boys transcribed articles written on paper scraps into elegant copy for the magazine pages, while others re-created the Republic of SHKID shield that appeared on many of the issues. Once the typewriter ribbon ran out after Vedem’s 30th issue, the boys wrote the remaining 53 issues of the magazine by hand.
