Vedem was borne out of the Republic of SHKID, a secret society formed by 40 Jewish boys who lived in Home #1, a three-tiered bunk room inside a converted school named L417. The boys were guided by their teacher Walter Eisinger, a Communist who preached free thought. The Republic of SHKID was named after Eisinger’s favorite book about a Russian orphanage. The boys ran the secret society, elected its president, created a shield and banner, wrote an anthem and published its manifesto in Vedem’s first issue.
