With materials limited and writing forbidden, just one copy of Vedem was produced each week, and it was “circulated” via an intimate spoken-word reading each Friday night in Terezin’s Home #1. One bunkmate always stood guard during the reading and gave a secret signal if a German guard was approaching. Vedem’s weekly readings among its writers and editors provided a rare forum for personal victory, truth, comradery and self-esteem, and eventually attracted some of Terezin’s cultural and academic elite who were drawn to the expressions of spirit, truth and solidarity.
